Hi, so I'm 18 currently, and since I was born my mother has been paying for some life insurance scheme (AIA Gold Scholarship Insurance?? Or something similar). She's described it to me as this

Ages 0-12: She paid $2,000 a year

Ages 12-18: The company paid her $3,000 a year

Age 18: One time payment of ~$17,000

My mother quite manipulative, doesn't work and I know she always attempts to hide money from my dad (the only worker) so I'm sure this money didn't come out of her pocket. However, today she told me to "keep the payout a secret" from my other family members - I believe she is going to buy me a phone+laptop+computer parts and wants me to transfer her the rest.

I have absolutely no idea what this insurance is (however it seem's legit as I saw the reciepts and everything) and just hoping for some advice. She isn't the greatest person so I'm not sure if I should just give her the entire $17k or talk to somebody. My dad doesn't speak english so she's basically in charge of my uni fees (Which they will pay).

My real question is what should I do? I've never dealt with this money in my life, and my mothers secretive attitude (and manipulative past) is making me very skeptical and suspicious. Any advice will be great. Thanks!
