I've been wanting to buy a bread maker for a while but they're just too damn expensive. I love baking bread, but I've only been doing no-knead options as I HATE kneading. Ideally I would love to have a Kitchen aid with a dough hook, but that's definitely not in the cards right now. So yesterday I went to my local Savers and found an Oster bread machine that looked barely used for $9.99! I sat on the floor in the appliance aisle for a good long time while I researched to make sure it had good reviews (they weren't the BEST, but mostly had 4 stars everywhere I checked) and that it still had all of its parts. And it goes for $80-90 brand new!
I bring my plunder home, plug it in, the panel lights up and beeps, buttons work, everything looks good. Great! Let's bake some bread!
I carefully measure all of the ingredients, dump them in, press the button, and hear "click.... click.... click" and nothing else. Crap, I forgot to check to make sure the damn thing actually mixed! Fortunately my husband spent most of his 20s working at his dad's used appliance shop and he knows how to fix a lot of minor issues. In about 20 minutes he took the whole thing apart, did some "percussive maintenance" (his term for banging things with a screwdriver), and got everything back up and running!
I was worried that my first batch of bread wouldn't come out well because the ingredients sat around for 20-30 minutes while my husband fixed the thing, but it came out pretty well! I'm very happy with my $10 purchase!
