I once attended hair-styling school, and found out that the only difference between permanent and semi-permanent color is the peroxide. If you just want to try a darker color out, or color only the greys (like me), you can buy a cheap kit at a dollar store (I get mine at Dollar General) for about $3, or you can just buy a bottle of dye from Sally for around the same price. Sally has more color choices.
You may already have a hair-color applicator bottle, but if not, buy a $1 mustard or catsup bottle with the cone-shaped tip from Dollar Tree (sometimes they are in a 2-pack). Mix the 2 oz. bottle of color with 2 oz. of distilled water (must be distilled, because other waters may have chemicals or minerals that can affect the dye), and VOILA! You have a semi-permanent color and a reusable application bottle for half the price of a bottle of semi-permanent color. Apply it to dry hair the same way you would permanent color, and it will wash out in 4-6 weeks.
