This project started with an accidental find. I was helping a friend clean out a storage locker and came across a vintage mid century table stand with no table top. I took it figuring that I would do something with it someday. Work time on this project was only about six to seven hours, however it took several weeks to complete including finding the wood and time between steps.FrameI took the stand home, wiped it down then spray painted it black with a flat black enamel finish.PaintPainted FrameI needed a table top that measured about 24 inches wide by about 42 inches long. That width would extend out equal to the foot base on the stand. I was a little shocked when shopping for finished pieces of maple, walnut or hickory online. People were asking $250 and more plus shipping. I found a 24 inch wide by 96 inch long piece of very dirty walnut at an estate sale several weeks later. It looks like this old piece of wood once served as a shelf of some sort. I paid about $15 for the piece of wood. I took it home and cut a 42 inch piece.Unfinished WalnutI stripped the walnut next. I needed to go over some areas more than once to get some of the difficult places clean. I started with a medium sand paper, sanded it and rubbing it down with mineral spirits to clean it. I went to a fine sand paper until the wood was as smooth as I felt I could get it. I cleaned it again with mineral spirits.StrippingSandingThe walnut was now smooth and clean and ready for stain.Stripped and cleaned walnutSeeing that it is a piece of walnut wood I decided to use a walnut stain. I didn't want to go too dark so decided on a light walnut stain. I painted a nice coating of stain and let it set for seven minutes then wiped it down. I let the wood sit overnight then looked at it the next morning. The result are below.StainAfter StainingI used a clear gloss finish on it. I didn't want the finish to be too heavy, but enough to protect the wood. I used long sprays across the wood at about 12 inches above the wood. I did one coat, came back the next day and did a second coat. I left it at that.Spray FinishFinished WoodThis table now serves as my turntable table for my vintage record collection.Completed ProjectComments Welcome via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2PSjDIM
