As the subject says, I’m working on a project where we have very large panels of 2 inch rigid foam. I need to be able to cut arbitary shapes into the center of the foam, and a standard hot wire cutter approach supported by both hands is not viable. We have been using standard sawblades in a jigsaw but the finish is not very good, so would like to try a hot wire approach. Are there any designs to do such a thing with nichrome other heated element in some kind of stand that could slide across the foam surface? The element could be a thin but rigid post or a blade type shape but ideally would be able to maintain consistent temperature (~600F) across the length of the blade, and handle reasonable heat loss from pushing it through the foam. I’ve got all manner of power supplies and could add a pid controller to manage temps.Any ideas are greatly appreciated! via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2zGLztY
