Hi all. Thanks to this sub, I found the app Moment when reading the various posts about cutting down phone/screen time.
I installed last night and have been tracking today, although my day isn’t over quite yet. And I’m on mobile at the moment so time will increase and also the formatting of this post might be wonky.
So far - as of this post, I’ve picked up my phone 62 (SIXTY TWO) times today, and actual screen time usage has been 2 hours and 9 minutes. Out of 24 hours in my day, that’s just shy of 9%. Of my waking hours (13 hours so far), it’s a little more than 15% of my day.
Granted, about half of the usage has been “utility” like the calculator for work, duolingo for language learning, and reading on my kindle app for pleasure. Duolingo and Kindle are two apps I use daily for self enrichment, and also simplification (not purchasing actual workbooks/flash cards and buying/borrowing physical books to minimize my belongings and “stuff.”)
The rest of the time, I was either on Reddit (which one can argue is either productive or not, I suppose depending on the time spent and which subs) and a couple times where I scrolled mindlessly through Instagram.
I will say that the longest period of phone usage was 13 minutes, and shortest (aside from NOT using) was 2 minutes.
It does have a feature to see which apps are used the most, however, as I stated above, I can kind of figure it out based on what I use my phone for.
I also use my computer for work, varying 6-8 hours per day of screen time as well, but rarely am I using it other for work. I might hop on Reddit once during the workday for 30 seconds in between assignments or when there’s a lag, but luckily never longer periods of time and no Facebook scrolling or news reading. So total screen time is probably 8-10 hours per day what in the actual fuck.
I’m curious to know if anyone else is tracking with Moment or a similar app, and what your usage is? Have you intentionally decreased after using the app? Do you have pangs of guilt picking up your phone as I am having now that I see my usage for what it really is? How are you dealing with the simplification dilemma of utilizing helpful/utilitarian/enrichment apps and their obligatory increase in your screen time?
By the way, I have no affiliation with this app, it’s just really blowing my mind enough to share how grafted I am to this fucking phone.
