We recently bought a house with a deck that makes me nervous. When there are more than a few people on the deck, I feel it swaying. Based on what I've tried to google, I think the problem is due to "wimpy post connections" as the way the posts are set up, I don't see any carriage bolts. It appears as the beams are just resting on a post without any connection. I'm not sure how to install carriage bolts on the Y-shaped post we have (see here) as I haven't found any similar examples online. We're also considering applying a diagonal brace under the deck.I would love some advice on how to install the carriage bolts on the existing posts or other methods of stabilizing the deck.
