Previous owners had dogs. Every time it gets humid (i.e. 80% of the year) the carpet smells like dog pee. Plus it’s seen more than its share of wear, with bald spots and whatnot. I can live with bald spots, but the smell is a source of embarrassment when I invite people to our otherwise lovely and reasonably clean home and it detracts from my ability to enjoy my own living room. Steam cleaning doesn’t help as the smell is down in the pad. I’m ready to rip it out, but money is tight and buying a pretty floor is taking a back burner to a collapsing driveway culvert, student loans, and some emergency expenses. Have kids so I need a way to do this that won’t result in splinters on baby feet. Is it possible? Would heavy duty paint and an inexpensive area rug be sufficient? Ideas?
