I’m 27, and I live with a roommate who always pays me in cash for his share of the bills. I have a checking (for easy access to funds) and a savings account (that has much more difficult access to force me to not touch it), but I’ve been thinking about putting away the cash he gives me every month into a lockbox I own. What are some (if any) benefits to this? Obviously there’s the big liability of having no way to get any of it back if it’s stolen or lost or burned up, etc., but I’m wondering if anyone has been in a situation where having a few thousand dollars in cash would have made a HUGE difference in a certain situation.

EDIT: I really appreciate all of the feedback and the overwhelming majority has told me not to do this. Riddle solved! Thanks guys.
