I’m an engineer and switched jobs less than a year ago to a manufacturing plant. We found out on Thursday that they will shutting down our plant to move it to a different country by September 2019. I was on vacation when the announcement happened, but have heard through coworkers’ texts and phone calls. They did also send out an email to the entire organization notifying them of our plant closure. However, I have not received any paper work yet or notification from my direct superior. I’m hoping this means that I’ll technically have a few more days for my 60 day notification for being laid off...?
I also will not be vested in my 401k until the very end of September 2019. Is there a way I can negotiate to be vested earlier upon being laid off or if I find a new job.
I don’t plan on applying to new jobs until mid October just because of all of the personal and work deadlines I already have between now and then. But I’m looking for advice in general: -do I have any leverage to negotiate a severance package or early 401k vesting (I stand to lose ~11k-15k from my 401k), I’m also slightly irked since they just hired me -do I have any rights on when I get laid off? Right now my partner will be moving to a new city sometime between February and June so I’d like to just find a new job there, but I’m the primary income for the household, so I can’t really afford to not have income. -any other advice is greatly appreciated. This is my first time going through something like this and I have no idea what to expect.
