I got divorced about 10 months ago. As a result my finances have been steadily growing; hit a savings goal of 3 months' pay, started investing with excess funds at the end of the month, etc. My credit score was at 815 and dropped to 790 as a result of the divorce. A couple of months after that I was able to raise it back up to 797 and everything was looking good!

But I missed a shared credit account.

My ex started using that account pretty heavily. Bumped the limit up from $6,000 to $16,000 and ran up a balance of $12,000 over the course of three months. My credit tanked hard. In June it dropped to 750. In July it dropped to 710. This is problematic because I am planning on buying a house in the next year. I called the bank that the credit card was through to ensure that my name got removed from the account, cited that I removed my card from that account back in December, and forwarded them the final decree of divorce as proof of the split. I just got the email back today saying that my name had been removed and the removal will be reported to the credit bureaus in September. So I get to start the slow climb back into my old credit score soon.

Dont be like me. If you're getting divorced make sure you get your name taken off of EVERY joint account.
