Against traditional advice I decided to buy a new car. It is a Mazda 3 so didn't go too crazy or anything. The reasons for me were

-i had driven my previous car 16 years and engine was toast -i plan to keep this car 12-16 years and when I do the math and compare to say a $5000 car that I might get 3-4 years out of + likely repairs I come out close to even -yes insurance will be higher but I'm old at this point so collision is not crazy expensive for me and at some point I will drop it on this car -2-3 year old cars of this make/model were like $2-$3000 within the price of new. Used cars are absurdly expensive for some models. -I'm in Canada and NAFTA trouble and talk of tariffs means I think new cars will be much more expensive starting in 2019 -Financially I'm doing fine, no other debts my home is paid for and I have pretty high savings. -My time is worth something. Sure I can find a gem of a used car but it takes time and at work I'm going through a pretty busy period so I don't have that. On that same point I don't have time to deal with breakdowns. -Most of the used cars I looked were borderline scams. Guy owned it for only a few months, messed up carproofs, sketchy stories, etc. Sure we all hear about the one owner 80 year old selling their babied vehicle but again finding this takes alot of time and luck
