Hi, I'm the friend of a minor who is in Illinois. I'm making this post on their behalf, since they cannot.
Let's start with the basics. My friend's mother is abusive and a huge control freak. She enrolled my friend in special ed when my friend is clearly not special ed (they didn't even bother testing them), and fully intends to have my friend sign away their rights when they turn 18 (parental guardianship or something, till they are 21). (Edit: Their father isn't any better, by the way.) Anyway, that's not the main reason I'm here.
When my friend turns 18, they are not going to sign away their rights of course. They will be promptly kicked out and homeless, with their bank accounts and money in their witch mom's control. Right now they work as a nurse resident assistant, doing two jobs, and all their paychecks go into an account controlled by my friend's evil mother. My friend has tried to get the mother's hands off the money, but the police have even been involved and forced my friend to hand over any cash or paychecks my friend has to their Mother, because apparently she legally owns it and do whatever the hell she wants.
How can we make sure my friend has money when they turn 18? What can my friend do to avoid this financial hell? This is a terrible situation, and I hope to be able to help my friend financially at the age of 18, but I may not be able to.
