I've been divorced since August 2016, but during the 2015 tax year, my ex-husband lied on our taxes to get more money. I refused to sign the tax return, but he forged my signature anyways!.. I knew this was wrong, but he wouldn't listen to me and would yell at me anytime I brought it up.. I made sure on our divorce decree that my ex-husband was responsible for any tax liability for that tax year, however when I called the IRS they said they don't honor that, but oddly enough requested a copy of my divorce decree..
So fast forward to 30 days ago, I got a notice in the mail saying that I owed $6,013.11 for that tax year. They told me on the phone that they have sent him a whole bunch of notices, and that he hasn't responded to any of them so they are going after me for the balance because I was secondary on the return. I had until today to pay or to fill out a form called Request for Innocent Spouse Relief, which I haven't done.. I have been so scared and panic'd and didn't really know what to do about all of this and I let it get away from me and now my 30 days are up! I would really appreciate any help or advice on what to do.
