Not sure if this is the right place for this, but thought I’d ask anyway.
Basically for a short contract job, I’m staying in a suite-style university residence (in a city very close to where my family and I live, so I can go home to do laundry on weekends) for 3 weeks in August. It has a kitchen with a sink, a fridge, an oven, and a stove but not much else. I’m looking for advice on how to pack very light without forcing myself into a position where I end up eating out for the full 3 weeks because I don’t have the tools to cook cheaply for myself.
Basically, I think I pretty much already own everything I would need to bring (or else I can borrow from my parents) but I just need some advice about what is actually necessary to bring so I don’t have to spend a lot of time and effort packing, especially because about a week after I move back home from the dorm, I’ll be moving to another city for 4 months (gotta love co-op), though my place there is fully furnished so I don’t need to worry about kitchen stuff.
Anyway, I’m not sure how many of these things are actually necessary, but here are the kitchen things I have access to if I wanted to bring them;
-
microwave
-
toaster
-
dishes, cups, and utensils
-
Tupperware
-
cooking pots
-
a frying pan
-
a colander
-
cutting board
-
a big bowl (for salads etc)
-
kettle
-
ladle
-
can opener
-
big knife (for cutting bread or pizza or whatever?)
-
measuring cups and spoons
-
huge spice rack (I definitely won’t need to bring all of it but I do have it)
-
rice cooker
I’m especially wondering if I’ll need some of the bigger appliances or if you think I could make do without.
In terms of food, I’m vegetarian if it makes a difference. I’ll obviously have to go grocery shopping, but I already have a massive sack of rice, a bottle of olive oil, a jar of peanut butter, and some tea from the last time I lived away from home a few months ago. I’m not a very creative or passionate cook, but I do cook because it’s cheap.
Anyone have any advice on what I should bring to keep things minimal? I’m hoping everything I bring will fit in a duffel bag (for clothes), a backpack (for my computer and other stuff I actually need for work) plus one big rubber bin (for kitchen stuff, bedding, a towel, and toiletries) so I can pack/unpack and move in and out pretty quick and everything will fit in my parents’ small car.
I’ve seen a lot of posts on here where people can literally fit everything they own in a suitcase or two and I have no idea how you do it unless you eat fast food every day! Someone enlighten me!
