Hey all. Just hoping to start a discussion regarding something I think we face a lot in modern society, particularly in the western world. The average life involves 8 hours of sleep, 8 hours of work, and then 6-8 hours of screen time until going back to sleep. This is the first time in the world we've seen a consistent habit of over-stimulation for prolonged periods of time. In previous years, the primary source of entertainment was reading, knitting, board games, or spending time with people whereas now the majority of our free time is spent watching television, browsing the internet, using social media, or playing video games. I know this isn't the case for everyone, and many people reject this lifestyle, but it is the majority-- especially for those under 30. I'm wondering what we think the long-term side effects of this kind of living are and if it could be a contributor to the rising diagnoses of ADHD, anxiety, and depression. Do you think we are experiencing a sort of addiction to stimulation that could be depleting our ability to experience pleasure when not as stimulated? What is your take on this?
