I got a new apartment with a wood burning fireplace. It's an odd feature for an apartment, but near as I can figure, this was meant to be a luxury apartment in the 80s so I guess some features that were seen as a luxury then are just a little odd now.

Is a wood burning fireplace in a 1 bedroom apartment worth the effort in the winter? Can I manage this to lower my heating costs? It's a pretty small fireplace. I'm in a city, so I doubt I'd get too many opportunities for free firewood, I'd likely have to buy it from Lowes or the grocery store.

If I use the fire place, will I need to be concerned about anything hung over the mantle getting exposed to too much heat? I'd like to make the wall with the fire place an accent wall with either a gallery wall of hung framed art, or a loud pattern of removable wall paper. But if I use the fire place, will that ruin either of those? My boyfriend is lobbying for me to hang the TV over the mantle, but I would only consider that if using the fireplace at all is deemed illogical.
