IRS sent me a letter stating I'd under-reported my income in 2016. Surprise, a company I've never worked for filed a 1099-MISC on me, and that company filed for bankruptcy early this year.
I've contacted the IRS and got the company's "current" mailing address and sent a letter via registered mail stating how the 1099-MISC is erroneous and asking them to file a corrected 1099-MISC for $0 of compensation. Once I get the registered-mail receipt back, I'll then CC the IRS as a formal response to their underpayment letter.
Anybody know what happens when the bankrupt company takes no action to rectify this?
Is there any other method to prove the negative that I didn't get compensation from them?
The added tax burden amounts to ~$1600, so, I'm loath to hire a lawyer to actually fight this since I figure I'd be just as well off to pay the IRS and wash my hands of it.
