Looking at my monthly outgoings, my commute to work is one of the most significant areas where I feel like I can make some savings. I work in a city centre office which has no parking of its own, but offers a subsidised rate of £3 per day at a nearby public car park. Over a five-day work week that's £60, over $80, per month on parking alone. Not to mention fuel, upkeep of my car, etc. Not good. That's almost a full month's worth of groceries for myself and my girlfriend.

I've been looking around on Gumtree for a cheap bike to offset some of this but my issue is that I know next to nothing about cycling or bike maintenance at this stage. I can find bikes from as little as £40 that look basically fine to my untrained eye, but buying a bike that's going to cause me a lot of issues and expense through maintenance and repair is kind of defeating the point. Are there any telltale signs that I should look for in that respect? Any general tips at all?

Thanks guys.
