She hired a tax preparer to do her taxes. She swears on her life that she never told, or discussed, her being a student for the preparer to claim these credits. She has never attended college. She owes the IRS $1,300 and has no idea what to do. The error is from her 2016 return, which was her first time ever filing taxes. We are really honest people, I would never imagine that she would willing lie to the IRS.
Realistically, what are her options? The IRS wants her to pay the $1,300 by June 6th, but she won't be able to afford that. I suggested filing a complaint with the tax preparer, but I'd imagine the burden of proof would be on my sister. And hiring a lawyer sounds expensive.
