I am turning 18 in june, and im currently living in ontario (and will be for the next 4 or 5 years for university), i am aware that credit cards are a very dangerous game to play if you are even slightly financially irresponsible; but i feel that i am smart enough (with money at least) to avoid the pit of debt.

I need a credit card to do a lot of things i want to do, such as shop online, rent a hotel room, rent a car etc. I was lurking on r/frugal and read somewhere that getting a credit card with really good rewards and a high interest rate is the way to go for someone who will be paying the card off immediately. Yet my mother says that i should play it safe and get obe with a good customer relations system and good purchase insurance.

My questions are: which option should i go with? The risky but with good rewards option? What kind of rewards? What cards are the best if i know i can pay it off right away? Should i play it safe? If so, what cards have good purchase insurance?

Sorry for formatting and any spelling errors, i'm on mobile.
