I recently received a 13% pay increase at work. My boss told me that come my next business travel season, I was going to be asked to travel much more than I had in the past, so my company wanted to compensate me for more work, which I thought was generous of them.

A week later I received an HR email detailing the pay increase. In that email, HR disclosed that the minimum wage for exempt workers in NY had increased to $50,700/year, the exact amount I was to be making after this raise. My employer basically lied to me about the reason k was getting this raise, it wasn’t amount more travel/work, they were legally obligated to.

Am I right to be annoyed by this? Is this something I could use to my advantage the next time I negotiate for a pay raise or promotion?
