Technically, the S&P 500 gained around 22%, but with futures (my broker has a 3% margin requirement), an investor could've made (0,22/0,03) a 733%. I'm guessing this is about the maximum leverage an individual investor can make, but what about hedge funds/institutional investors), how much leverage can they actually have in a position? Basically I'm wondering what was the "maximum" gain someone could've made investing in the S&P 500 even though most hedge funds would hedge their positions with other financial instruments.
