One recommendation I frequently see is to hold stocks long-term. I'd like to make a few investments in tech stocks, including large companies with long histories like Microsoft, but also smaller companies like Shopify.

Since Shopify is relatively new, it may continue to grow like a weed for the next 10-15 years. But it might also go bust and eventually be replaced entirely by a competitor.

If someone is "long" on Shopify, how long would they typically plan to hold that stock? Is holding a stock "too long" sometimes a bad idea?
