I'm clueless, but I'm reading sidebars, wikis and have books on the way.
My money has been sitting in a money market account doing nothing and I've been afraid to start investing. I've broached the subject many times, but I've been paralyzed with the fear that I'm a babe in the woods with wolves that see me coming. I want to stop being afraid and make the jump - but I need the help of you kind strangers.
Want to start with Roth IRA as mentioned in the title. I know annual limit is $5500 and I qualify. I've opened a TDAmeritrade account and funded it with $5500 dollars.
First question: Is funding the account enough or does it have to also be invested today to count as 2017 contributions?
Second question: I think a three fund portfolio is where to start? I see US total stock market index fund, total international stock index fund and short term or total bond index fund recommended... I have NO idea how to actually execute any of this though. TDAmeritrade Overview page is BUSY and FRIGHTENS me.
Third question: If I made the wrong decision with TDAmeritrade, can I transfer my account to Vanguard or another company without penalty?
You guys must be the most patient sub on reddit. I imagine you're constantly flooded with urgent versions of the same 3 questions everyday forever. Thanks for the time/attention if you can spare it, I'm genuinely lost without you find people.
I can almost taste the cat food I'll be forced to eat in retirement as of now.
