My husband are on the same page for a lot of the same things. One of those things unfortunately is not grocery shopping, and it’s somewhere I know we can budget better. If I lived alone, I’d be happy with bulk beans and rice, potatoes, ground turkey, vegetables etc., but my husband is way more into things that are not only unhealthy, but expensive.
I do most of the shopping and cooking, but if I don’t get the chips and cookies requested for lunches or don’t cook the exact amount of leftovers for the week (too much or too little), he will go pick up food anyway. If we’re coming back from a hike and are hungry, he’ll suggest we pick something up. We go out to eat once a week as a treat and he gets a pizza or sandwich once a week, and that I’m totally fine with—I don’t want to completely take over and rule the dinner table. But I do get frustrated when it’s 3 or 4 days in a row! I try to buy some convenient frozen things/ready meals, but it’s hard to find cheap and healthy. When it’s already in my house, I find myself sometimes giving in, too.
We are doing good financially, but I am about to transition to another job (that will hopefully pay off in the long run!) and take a pay cut. I definitely don’t want to take any joy from him in way of grocery because of my decision/career, but I don’t really think it’s joy, just lack of time and effort when it comes to a diet. Regardless, I’ve always thought excessive “convenient foods” was a waste of money that could go towards other things we like.
Anyone have any suggestions or opinions on how we can further compromise?
Thank you!
