Hi all - Thanks in advance for the help!

For the last 9 years, I've worked in development and planned giving for a couple of nonprofits. Along with establishing and maintaining relationships with donors across the country, I've worked with CGAs, Trusts, Donor Advised Funds, and other general endowment funds. Through my donors, I've developed relationships with account managers, trust administrators and CFPs.

Recently, the wealth manager of one of my biggest donors approached me with an offer to join his team. The company would sponsor me through the CFP coursework and tests and would give me a salary to start as I set my footing. Before the offer is official, I need to interview with the other team members, and I also want to make sure that I will be set up for success with a team that'll mentor me through the early years.

I love spreadsheets/numbers and human interaction, and along with my unique nonprofit background, I think I could be a great member of this team, but I want to go into these interviews with a solid understanding of wealth management and the tools/instruments/investments (life insurance, CDs, IRAs, annuities...) that I wouldn't know about from my nonprofit experience. Although I have some experience with different ways to invest and plan and graduated with a business degree 10 years ago, I need a refresher course.

Any and all advice is welcome, but I'm specifically looking for the following:

  • Any advice for someone making this particular career change?

  • Any suggested reading/research/podcast/media to give a basic rundown of Financial Planning/Wealth Management?

  • Is there a website or list of investment instruments and how they work?

  • Anything to be sure to ask/mention on an interview?

  • Anything else that I haven't asked you all about, but I should have the answer to?

Thanks all -- I'm really excited for this opportunity and to hear from all of you!
