CURRENT JOB
My boss left our company around 4 months ago. It was unexpected, so the senior management was scrambling to reorganize. My boss and I were a two-person team who handled all of the systems and processes for our 300-person team. I knew everything he knew, and vice versa. Both have been there 10 years.
So they basically gave me all of his responsibilities, without any change in title or salary. My workload has been crazy but I'm succeeding, so I told them I would like a promotion that reflects my added responsibilities, otherwise this was not going to work for me.
They were surprisingly very receptive and asked me to give them time before making any decisions. I agreed. They have been updating me every other day that they're "going to fix this", so I appreciate their urgency.
They just told me that I might have to wait for next round of promotions in November. I don't think this is acceptable because they are already having me do the work, and I don't want to wait 8 months to see their offer.
OTHER JOB
An old friend had asked me to come to a few lunches with his company to help improve their systems and processes. Their whole senior management was on those meetings. After the second lunch, one of them walked me downstairs and asked if I would come work for them. He made a convincing pitch.
I thanked him for the opportunity and asked him to send along more details.
DILEMMA
I have no idea what to do now. Do I tell them another company is interested? I don't want to waste the other company's time by using an official offer to negotiate a raise at my current job. I also don't want to squander this new opportunity if my current job isn't going to fix this until November.
I am 100% certain that my current job desperately needs me more than I need them. They put way too much business-critical knowledge and work on a tiny team, and now it's all just in one person. I am trying to document it all, but it would take someone years to get going full speed.
They keep asking me to "please not make any decisions until we fix this" and I feel bad because I didn't pursue this new option, it just happened. But it's definitely relevant now.
I don't want to come across as aggressive, but I am sick of the waiting and promises. It's a huge / lucrative company, and I know they can make it happen.
