My grandmother is 78 years old, lives in Mississippi, is on a number of expensive medications having high blood pressure, multiple strokes, and diabetes. My grandfather passed away a couple of years ago, taking his "until death" retirement pension with him.

She gets no government assistance of any kind, because she owns a house (worth approximately $75,000), and had $42,000 in the bank at the time of her husband's death. Now she has $24k after funeral expenses, etc.

She gets just over $1000 each month from Social Security. Her bills for meds and utilities eat up all or more of that each month. Her current plan is to just keep living until all her money is gone, sell her home and move into apartment, live until that money is gone, and then look into government assistance. Does she have any other options?
