In my tenth year after graduating, today I’ve finally paid off my student loan.
I’m really lucky as my class was the last year where tuition fees were £1,115 per year, so my overall loan was only £13k.
I left university with a £2k overdraft and £2k credit card debt.
By the end of this year I will have saved 25% deposit plus all fees (legal, search, estate agent and stamp duty) for my next house (£280k), married with no debt from the wedding, and a firm platform going into the next chapter of my life.
Ive always planned my life on a spreadsheet. I have the next twelve monthly payments, with every deduction you can think of listed - all bills, gym, haircuts, birthdays, Christmas, holidays, budget for clothes m, cosmetics, protein etc - as well as savings for my new house and wedding - so I always know how much each month I’m left to play with.
It might be really anal, but having such clarity over my finances really has put me in a great position.
I’ve friends who still live at home, buy clothes every month, go out each week, but they are always skint. I budget for these things so I never go beyond my means. I’m by no means a hermit, but my life priorities are different.
Just wanted to tell someone // anyone, that planning really can sort you out.
