I've tried cord-cutting a couple of times but always end up coming back because there's inevitably some show or sporting event that is really hard, if not impossible, to get without some type of satellite or subscription service. Also - the ability to pause/record TV is really important to me.

If you live in an area where Spectrum is a cable provider (formerly Time Warner) they are now apparently starting to dabble in a "choose your channels" model.

The current deal they have going is really good. You get all major over-the-air networks + local channels and then you get to pick any 10 other networks you want for a total of $25/month. You can add HBO with HBO-GO for an additional $7.50 or all the "premium movie channels" (HBO, Showtime, Starz, etc) for $15.

For me this ended up being a huge savings. I got a Tivo Bolt, a cable card from Spectrum, and the "Choice" package w/HBO and my total bill per month including the Tivo service is $52.49

DirecTV I was paying an insane $224/month - I'm saving $2,064 per year now.

Just thought I'd share as this seems like a really good middle-ground if you want to save some money on TV/media but you aren't ready to go full-blown cord-cutting.
