Hi Everyone,

For the last 8 years I have lived in Eastern Europe and this is my first time back to the States during that time for longer than two weeks.

Since leaving the US I have married and we have a daughter who is less than a year old. She is reason number 1 for the trip.

Reason number 2 for the trip is that we want to "test the waters" and see if America really is a place we can/want to live. So we are actually going to be taking a road trip from Pennsylvania down to Georgia, with stops in NC, SC, and VA during that time. The idea is to look at some towns we might want to live in and try to get a feel for them in terms of cost of living, "niceness" of the area, and the people.

When we're not doing the road trip, we will be staying at my mom's house in southern NJ and seeing friends in SE PA. I'd like to take some day trips with my wife and mom during that time and try to make the most of our time there.

So there are two parts:

  • Day trips in NJ/PA area (bulk of the trip)
  • Road trip from PA to Georgia (probably about 2 weeks)

We plan to rent a car for the road trip and maybe periodically for the bulk-part of the trip.

Considering these two things: road trip and day trips...I'd really like some advice on how to live, see some things, and have a nice time, albeit frugally.

Questions:

  • Excluding airfare and car rental, what kind of daily budget would /r/frugal recommend for a) the roadtrip and b) the home time
  • What are some general tips to save money on the road?
  • What are the cheapest stores for buying fresh, tasty ingredients for home cooking?
  • Does anyone know where I can get a coupon for a rental car?
  • Any other advice you guys can offer?

Thank you so much!
