Insurance companies have negotiated steeply discounted rates with rental car companies. Some insurance companies will let their customers take advantage of those rates, which can be 30-40% lower than what the rental company sells to the general public at.
YMMV on whether or not your insurance company does this (mine did) - but it's worth calling them.
