I had to go to the ER the end of 2016 because of a bug bite. At the time I had a health sharing plan. So no insurance, but it works similar to insurance. What insurance would call my “deductible” was only $500.

At the time of the visit, that deductible was covered so I was going to owe nothing. When you add another person, it adds $500 to that deductible. I added my husband on it in the spring of 2017 and it naturally went to $1,000.

My hospital bill was being processed at that time and their system didn't really know how to handle the switch so a $40.00 bill from the ER trip slipped through the cracks. They were supposed to pay it, but they didn’t.

Looking at it, they did get it adjusted down to $5.00.

Now here’s the fun part.

I moved so the hospital didn’t have my current address to send bills to and the acknowledgment for the adjustment didn’t get to me either. I couldn’t forward my address because it was listed as a business for some reason.

So now I have a debt collector calling me for the full amount of $40.00 because my health sharing miscalculated what I owed and didn’t pay the $5……… and I didn’t catch it.

I called my health sharing company and pointed it out to them. They are re-looking at it.

My question is, if this bill is already at a debt collector, can my health sharing company still pay the hospital directly? Can this be labeled as a mistake for my credit report?

My gut says this is my responsibility and it slipped through the cracks. Part of me thinks it’s funny and the other part is stressed because……well, I love my credit score. haha
