I’m sure I’m not the first nor will I be the last.

I have an 18 year old kid. He got his first job working casual hours. As soon as he hit 18 he signed to an expensive mobile phone contract despite our best reasoning with him that it was outrageously expensive and stupid. He has been late on payments every month since, even having his phone calls restricted by the phone company. I discovered driving fines and pay day loan slips in his room today while searching for a borrowed phone plug. All up this kid has got himself into about $1500 of debt and some overdue driving fines that will impact on his record very poorly.

He is a student and for the type of work he wants to get into his blemished driving record will hurt his employment prospects badly.

Despite hours of sitting down with him working out budgets, setting up great bank accounts etc he has fucked up enough that on his meagre income it will take him 6 months to get back in the black. Do we as parents jump in and crack down and take over his finances/budget? Or go with tough love and leave him on his path to financial disaster? I’d be very grateful for input from other parents who have been through similar situations.
