I was living in the mountains last year and almost bought the cabin I was staying at with a loan from my dad but the deal fell through (long story, but we were going to get the property for 40k and it would have been a hell of a deal) and I've had to move back home with the parents.
I'm about a quarter of the way through dealing with some (2nd dui I got a few years ago and blew off until the end of last year when I decided to start handling my business) legal troubles. I have lucked out with probation so far and while it technically started in the November I haven't had a meeting yet (first one is this Wednesday) so I've saved about 300 in probation costs. However those expenses are coming at me now. It will be 50/month for probation I also will have classes at 100/month, and 48 hours of pay in donations (this county I transfered probation to allows you to pay off your hours of community service).
The job I just got is 4 miles away and while temporarily manageable to walk there I would really like to get a vehicle going. There's a lot of decent used ones around for 2-3k, but I also have to get an interlock in addition to sr22 insurance.
My folks are great and I really appreciate them putting me up rent free as long as I need. I moved out at 18 and would really like to get into my own place again as soon as possible.
Obviously legal stuff comes first but that won't be a significant amount of my pay. After that, I'm not really sure what to focus on. I'm terrible with money and have a really determental blasé attitude about debt where I just put stuff off and ignore it. I've always sort of lucked out with things falling into place but being thrown back to about square one with some hurdles to get through I'd really like to develop some good habits for myself and build a good foundation going further.
I'd also like to work on my credit score, I'm just above 500 with both equifax and transunion according to credit karma, though I have no idea how accurate that is.
Any insight or advice on how to tackle this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
