Let's say you are doing pretty well and want to spread the love a little. Maybe $1k-$5k. My wife wants to do some "direct action" type giving. I.e. not donate to a big charity, but get money into someone's hands that need it as directly (and probably locally) as possible.
Here are some ideas we've had, but we're looking for more:
- leave money with a trusted mechanic to pay for work for someone that desperately needs help (could be done similarly in other places)
- ask library if they have anyone who has stopped coming because they can't pay their fines
- small scholarship
- local women's shelter
I know there have to be people in the community who are right at the water level and barely keeping it together, where even just $300 could make a huge difference--we used to be those people! But how do we find them and help them, other than giving to Big Name Charity?
