I am trying to choose between two job opportunities. I am trying to find the right balance between financial security and a positive career move. Just for reference, I am 30 years old and live in the Philadelphia suburbs. My monthly expenses all-in are $2,500 and my previous salary was approx. $47,500.

I work in marketing and the agency I was employed by for the last five years (as W2 employee) closed and I've been unemployed for just over 2 months. My previous employer didn't offer benefits other than time off, so right now I'm still paying for my own health insurance ($240/mo. currently) and don't have any sort of retirement account or savings.

Below are the two opportunities I'm evaluating. Both are remote jobs, so there will be no commute. I also like both teams/cultures equally, but feel I will have more autonomy with Company A overall.

Company A - a software company based in Europe (no U.S. headquarters). The role is for a content manager. Basics of the job would be creating content calendars, writing/managing the blog, and managing a team of freelance writers. (This would be my first role with any sort of managerial responsibility.)

  • Starting salary: €38,000 (Google conversion: $46,800)
  • 30 days time off per year, plus ability to take off local holidays
  • They ideally prefer to set up independent contractor roles with the people they hire, so I would have no benefits other than time off. So, I would have to continue paying for my own insurance and would need to learn how to handle SE taxes or possibly set up a company to "employ" myself. (I read by doing it this way I can pay into unemployment in PA, which would give me a safety net just in case.)
  • Travel to conferences and team building events 5 times per year, with flight+hotel+conference fees 100% covered by the company. (I love to travel, so this is appealing.)
  • They review salaries twice per year and raise them based on business results.

Company B - IT firm based in New York City. The role is for a content writer. Basics of the job would be writing all the firm's content, such as blog posts, case studies, eBooks, brochures, thought leadership, etc. No management component here, and less marketing responsibility than I had in my previous role.

  • Starting salary: $50,000 (W2 employee)
  • Company pays 100% of medical and dental insurance
  • $2,000 yearly allowance for attending conferences or getting certifications
  • $25 cell phone reimbursement
  • Flexible/unlimited time off (basically do your work and don't take off during the busy season)
  • 401k program (don't have details yet of employer match)

I think Company A offers more in terms of growing my responsibility and autonomy, as well as it being more of a springboard for moving into the next level of my career eventually. Company B clearly has the upper hand with the benefits but I'll have less hands-on impact on the business and less autonomy; it's more of a lateral move rather than up. Both organizations also tend to promote from within. How should I be weighing the career aspect vs. the immediate financial one?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
