So I'm not perfectly frugal; for example my SO and I get takeout/eat out a lot (but we also save a lot too, our eat out budget is part of our fun/vacation/hobby fund). But there are a couple of little things I suggest people try when they get started with frugality. Frugality in many ways is like weight loss; slow, steady, and permanent changes you can stick to are how to win.
So heres a short list:
- Order water instead of soda/coffee when out with friends save 2.50/meal, assuming once a week thats 130 a year
- Switch cellphone plan to prepaid: my original bill was 110/m (2 phones), lowered to 70/m, 480 per year saved
- Netflix/hulu/amazon instead of cable, average cable bill is 1200 per year, services together is 328, so 872 saved
- Maintaining a one car household (though we might buy a second soon), average cost to maintain/own a car per year is 9000
What little changes do you make?
disclaimer: sometimes its not really saving money its opting not to spend more. For example we have never had two cars so its not like Im paying myself an extra 9000 for making a "change."
