After seeing a few posts I decided to share this quick story about what happened to me last summer.

When temps where literally their highest my family noticed we were on the brink of sweating one day. We figured it was the central air struggling to keep up due to outside heat.

This problem persisted and I noticed that the central air was not even running. I did some quick research and figured out it would kind of work if I manually moved the fan with a stick it would keep spinning.

I eventually called Sears and he said that the capacitor was blown and proceeded to quote me $360 bucks. $110 for the part and $250 for labor(1 hr). I asked for an itemized bill and noticed the part number listed.

I looked online and immediately found the part on a site that accepted PayPal for $18. Yeah, $18. I then watched some youtube videos for approx 30 mins. Once the part came I shut off the power to the central air unit, and spent literally 15 minutes replacing the capacitor. Turned the power back on and viola! AC fixed for less than $20 and about 45 mins of research/work. The AC still works fine to this day with no further maintenance required. Also the amount of cool points gained with the family were worth it alone.

I also had a similar experience with my dryer that stopped turning(simple belt replacement).
