My house is about 10 years old and has old worn down polyester carpet. To make matters worse, our dog had fleas about a year ago and so the carpet was doused with insecticide. Haven't had the money to replace it but now I've been shopping around and am surprised at the prices for nylon carpet.

Note, I did search this sub for previous posts about carpet and did not find anything very useful.

  • I don't live anywhere near Dalton, GA.

  • I also have an account with ConsumerReports.com but when I search for carpet, it only shows results for carpet cleaners.

  • I did already look at laminate flooring options and spent a $1k and a few weekends installing a Pergo floor in a bonus room, but this is not a desireable option for the rest of the home that is carpeted (i.e. bedrooms, stairs, hallway).

My laminate countertops also seem to have water damage and are delaminating. I'll probably need new decking as well. I'm leaning toward installing laminate again but don't plan to sell my house any time near into the future.

It seems like the best value option, but not cheapest, is to go with Home Depot and it's looking like a total cost of about $9k max ($6k for nylon carpet, $3k for laminate countertops in kitchen and bathrooms with decorative tiling).

Any advice on how to save?

I am a DIY'er but don't want to spend a month or two on a project that puts our basic amenities out of commission.

Also there isn't any warranties on the house or carpet, so that's out of the question.
