Maybe this is common knowledge, but it was a first for me. Basically, I had sweet potatoes and apples that were down to their last day, but still edible. In this situation, I didn't think freezing them was the best route, so I actually decided to cut them up and add them to the chicken and rice soup I was making. It sounded crazy to me at the time, but again I was feeling frugal and didn't want to toss them. Anyway, I had to add a bit of vinegar and a dash of soy sauce to get the sweetness to go away (something I don't typically add to chicken & rice soup), but it actually turned out to be delicious.

I expected my family to eat it out of kindness, but they actually want me to make it this way in the future! Anyway, so I just wanted to share that there might be other similar ingredients that can be used in odd ways simply by modifying the recipe a little (in my situation it was vinegar to offset the sweetness).
