Good morning! I’m a 24 year old female, and from the ages of 17 and 22 I had a weird illness that caused me to get chronic debilitating hives and swelling, often resulting in anaphylactic shock and having to be rushed to the emergency room. Even after my health insurance, the costs for this were sky-high and I could not afford the co-pays as I was missing so much work. I now have a good paying job and I’ve saved up enough to potentially settle this debt. Some of the debts have been around so long that they aren’t on my credit report, but about $5,000 still has three years or so before it disappears, and I’ll need to buy a car before then, so I really want to get these debts paid and off of my credit report. How do I go about settling this debt? It’s all from the same hospital, and when I spoke with the collections agency they stated that this particular group won’t settle for less than 10%, which to totally fine - I was hoping to pay half. I’m supposed to write a letter to settle and send it to them. How should I write this letter, and how do I ensure that these debts will be removed from my credit report? I just don’t want to miss any crucial steps here and risk shooting myself in the foot. Thank you in advance!
