My wife and I recently purchased a home that was built in 1978. Prior to putting it on the market, the previous owner had all of the rooms painted white so that it would show better. This included painting over wallpaper in about 75% of the rooms. At least that is what we think since we can see the lines of the wallpaper strips about every 20 inches. We are getting ready to prepare a room for our new baby and two of the walls in that room have wallpaper. Last night I tried to peel some off just to get a better idea of what we were dealing with. I took off an outlet plate so I could get a good spot to start. I was able to get under the wallpaper and use a small putty knife to peel away or chip away at the wallpaper (at least what I thought was wallpaper). It actually came off pretty easily, but underneath was a black material that looked like and felt like construction paper. My question is, what is this, is it a sub layer of wall-paper, the glue, a sub-layer of dry-wall or wallboard? I didn't spend much time dealing with it, it might sand right off. I thought I'd check first to see if anyone had seen this before or could shed some light on what this was and a strategy for continuing our project.
