I signed up for AT&T for their bundle package in January 2017 for a two-year contract for phone, internet, and TV. At the time, my family was considering moving to a new home and as such, when we signed up, we asked what would happen if we moved to a new location, but the contract was still in the middle of the two years.
They said it would be no problem. They would switch our service over to the new home with no added fees or change in monthly costs. Because of this promise and because they offered a pretty good deal over our current service (Time Warner Cable, now Charter, had screwed us over many times), we signed the contract.
In December, we completed the move and switched over the service to the new home. We called AT&T to move the service and it was the most hassle and worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. Between my parents and I, we spent close to 50 hours in total calling AT&T regarding multiple cancelled appointments, failed installations which ended up taking weeks, and even fake excuses such as "There was a wildfire in your city and hence we couldn't arrive at your house." even though the wildfire was 50+ miles away.
After complaining over and over, they offered us a paltry $20 in return for our troubles (which really means they valued our time spent for all of this at less than $0.40 an hour). It was quite frankly, insulting, but we finally got everything installed.
Our bill came today and it's jumped over $80. When I called, they said the move caused our service to reset and now we are on a new two-year contract. But because it's a continuation of our previous contract, the introductory bonus was removed and hence it's now $80 more expensive per month. I know for sure I did not sign or agree to a new contract, but they claim if I want to terminate this contract, I'd have to pay $20 for each remaining month in early termination fees.
What can I do? It seems like I'm being coerced into paying this fee no matter what I choose to do. I remember reading on an earlier post on /r/personalfinance that this means they redid your contract and hence you are now set free from that contract. Can anyone confirm? What is the right process moving forwards?
