Currently, I live in New York City, but I just needed to move back to North Carolina while my wife receives treatment for cancer. Since we live in NYC, we don't own a car, however I'm going to need one while she is undergoing treatment here. The tricky thing is we don't know exactly how long we'll be here, but it should be around 1 year.

What do you think my best option for getting a cheap, yet reliable car will be? I looked into taking over someone else's lease, however it's tough since we don't know how long we'll be here exactly, while renting also seems expensive over that length of time. Does it make the most sense to just buy a used car and then sell it? One other consideration is that her insurance will reimburse us for $10,000 worth of travel expenses, which does include renting a car. Not sure if it would cover leasing or purchasing though.

If we did purchase one, any recommendations on brands and years that won't lose too much value if we resold the car after 12 months or so?
