In my never ending quest to make/save a few bucks I stumbled on the DietBet app. It's exactly like it sounds, you join a pool of people who have all bet that they will lose weight. The winners that actually do split the pot. Before you all shout about r/hailcorporate, I'm not that, just want to give you my honest experience.
I joined a $30 pool to lose 4% body weight in one month. I don't eat that healthy (think chips and a beer for dinner), and I didn't want to start spending more money on healthier food. So, instead I just ate less. I would guess that I saved about $30-$50 through the month just buying and eating less. I ended up losing 7 pounds, which was more than I needed to win the bet. Ended up making a little over $20 on the app for winning (total winnings were $52 dollars, minus the $30 bet).
So, long story short, I saved about $40, made $20, and lost 7 lbs. Not bad!
My one qualm with the app is that they take a significant amount out of the pot for their administrative costs (25%!). So, unfortunately you can never hope to make too much off of one bet. Still pretty good tho.
