My company is currently going through lots of lay offs and the future is very uncertain. HR sent out an email offering us a voluntary severance of 2.5 months salary if we leave now or risk being laid off without severance. Obviously if I take it I won't be able to collect unemployment because it's voluntary.

My severance would essentially be about $8500. If I were to hold out I would continue getting paid but I'm not guaranteed to be safe and it's a very real possibility I could get laid off around the holidays due to multiple lawsuits we are currently facing. Severance is not guaranteed after this is and although I have enough savings to last us 4 months it would really be tough without the severance

If I take my chances and get laid off I can collect a total of about $10,000 over a 6 month period.

I did the math and if I find a job within 5 months the package is a better deal.

Some additional information; I get paid a decent amount but it's a dead end job. I feel I'm not developing professionally and I've actually been looking for other jobs for about a month or so. Management has lied and dicked people around since I started 20 months ago.

My initial reaction was that this is a blessing in disguise and that I should take this time off and look for the next chapter of my life. Im understandably nervous surrounding the uncertainty but am kinda hoping you guys will reaffirm my decision to leave.
