Using general cardboard boxes from grocery store etc for moving comes up to front page every now and then so I felt that I needed to make a counter-point as someone who has done propably about 20 pretty large relocations of home using generic cardboard boxes and with rented moving boxes.
My advice is just make yourself a huge favour and rent "real" plastic moving boxes. They don't cost much but make moving so much easier and less stressful, for simple reason that they are designed to be STACKABLE (if put on top of each other the right way, they won't sink into each other but an inch, leaving pressure free storage to each box but still creating solid and safe "towers" without having to tie up anything). Most people don't come to think of this, but moving will be easy when you can stack your 40lb dumbbels on top of your wedding china without having to worry. Also you can fit about double amount of stuff into your van or trailer because of the increased efficiency.
