I hope this not belong on /r/relationships but I am in a difficult spot. I asked my girlfriend of 9 months to split a new apartment with me, a 50-50 split. She is making 37% less than me (net). For what it's worth she is also in the lowest US tax bracket.

A little background: We are both fairly new graduates. She has been unoffically living with me and my roomates for the past 3 months without paying rent to any of us. I told her I did want her money and neither did the roommates. As of late, we weren't aware it would take us this long to get a place of our own and she has since started paying only the roommates her fair share. I told her I did not want her money for this situation specifically.

In conclusion, she has gone about 3 months without paying rent and is now paying next to nothing for rent as we're splitting it 4 ways and I'm covering a third of her portion under my split. She will also be going through more schooling in the next year or so and during this period she will obviously not be making a living wage.

I'm ultimately stuck on what to do. She is very upset I had even asked her to split rent 50-50. Her biggest argument is that I am obviously making a lot more than her. My biggest peeve is that I don't feel that I need to support her financially at this point. We are not in matrimony.

I will take any advice on how to proceed. I'm not sure if I am in the wrong or if I should hold my ground.
